Yet the athlete has altered his approach in the last few weeks, attempting to approach the net and compete positively, backed up by an enhanced serve.

The champion fought back from a disadvantage in the initial set against the tricky opponent, securing four of the last five exchanges to take the lead.

The pair exchanged service breaks in the second set before the challenger, striving for his first tour title, gained dominance to push for a decider.

He defended 4 early opportunities in a tight final set before the champion secured a break to 15 to secure the win.

Fittingly, the winner earned the win with a rally at the net, with the Frenchman incapable to handle a return after over two and a half hours.
