Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded ten goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, before he publicly stated that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to tell if they are improving or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Presence

A single player remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his parent club were attempting to stay there for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
